Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: '26/27 HMRC sign-ups begin this month

From September 2026, HMRC will start signing up taxpayers who need to use Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax for the 2026/27 tax year, but who haven’t yet signed up themselves.

You need to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax if your total annual income from self-employment and property is over £50,000.

Qualifying income is your total income from self-employment and property. This is the amount before expenses (also known as turnover), based on the tax return you submitted in the previous year.

If you’re affected, there’s still time to take control and sign up yourself or ask your accountant to do it on your behalf.

Why sign up now? You can make sure the information HMRC holds is up to date, including:

✔️ Your current income sources

✔️ Any changes to your circumstances

✔️ The correct details from the outset

If HMRC signs you up, they’ll use the information they already hold about you. This may not reflect changes that have happened since your last tax return.

Not sure whether MTD for Income Tax applies to you, or need some help getting ready? If you’re looking for an accountant to guide you through the changes, give the Styles & Associates team a call. We can talk through your requirements and provide you with a quote for our accounting services.
